Open and Close (Winterize) Outdoor Plumbing
It is extremely important to winterize outdoor plumbing. Indianapolis and Johnson County, Indiana temperatures can fall below freezing many times during spring, fall, and winter. A frozen and burst hose bib (also called a hose spigot or outdoor faucet) can cause major water issues inside your home as well as increasing your water bill with potential leaks.
Additionally, if heat will not be on in your home or business during winter months, it’s very important to have a professional plumber winterize your pipes. A frozen and burst pipe can be a nightmare to repair. Frozen pipes can be especially destructive since most owners don’t find this mess for weeks or maybe months after the issue occurred. Water can do a great amount of damage to your home.
If you are attempting to winterize your home, simply turning the water main shut off valve to the “off” position is not enough. The water lines throughout your home will still contain water that can freeze and burst. Toilets have a tank and bowl full of water that will freeze and break the porcelain of the toilet. Faucets will have water in them as well and leaving water in faucets to freeze can ensure they will not work properly when you use them the next time.
Always remove hoses from hose bibs before the first freeze.
Many of our homeowners will need to winterize their pool house, carriage house, and/or barn. Anything that contains plumbing and will not be used during winter should be winterized. The plumbing items will be damaged if not winterized properly. The process is affordable and can be scheduled well in advance. We will also remind you when it’s time to open and close these items.
